Wonder Woman 1984 Movie Review.
Wonder Woman is back in Wonder Woman 1984 and so are Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and director of Wonder Woman 2017 Patty Jenkins in this sequel that was released in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day 2020.
My Thoughts:
Personally, I enjoyed the first Wonder Woman enough in spite of its flaws like a villain revealed soooo late into the film and certain scenes that dragged, but overall an enjoyable film and the action was as enjoyable as the chemistry between the actors, namely Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. With 1984 while I don’t dislike it as much as others apparently have, including Rotten Tomatoes which gave it a score of 60% (still fresh though not nearly as well received as the first movie’s 93% score) I do see more flaws in the film such as the opening flashback being a bit dragged out too long. We already know Diana’s background and saw much of her island and her life there with her mother in the first film. In this one it went too long for my taste. Also, I felt that the rise of geeky, quirky Barbara Minerva becoming Wonder Woman’s arch nemesis, “Cheetah” was a bit rushed and didn’t feel as earned that this sweet natured girl would become so dark and messed up so fast without a real powerful reason like The Joker’s descent into madness in 2019’s Joker for example. I know it’s Wonder Woman’s movie so the whole film of course can’t focus everything on Barbara but since the villain role is often as important as the hero, I would’ve liked Barbara’s descent into madness to have been more fleshed out and earned. It would’ve made her change feel more satisfying.
Perhaps if time wasn’t wasted on the very boring Maxwell Lord and the odd wish crystal subplot we could’ve got more focus on Barbara’s character’s development into Cheetah.
Though what it lacks in substance and a more cohesive plot It makes up for in great action sequences like the exciting scenes at the Mall where Wonder Woman takes down some jewel thieves and saves a couple of sweet little girls or the epic car chase which included Diana stopping a bullet from hitting Steve Trevor in the car with her lasso.
All in all I wouldn’t call Wonder Woman 1984 my favorite superhero movie but it’s still a perfectly fine piece of entertainment that could’ve been better but it also could’ve been worse which people should always remember when comparing with flops much more hard to watch. I honestly mostly enjoyed the film and hope to see more of Diana Prince kicking butt in the future.
Peace out!
