There have been many series finales of television shows. Many of them have been huge disappointments to their fanbases. A few of them have become all time classics. Where does the final episode of Everybody Loves Raymond fall? For this author, it’s definitely among the greatest and most perfectly fitting of all. Here are five reasons why the Everybody Loves Raymond series finale is one of the most perfect finales of all time.
5. It came at the perfect time when the show was still on top.
Most shows jump the shark the longer they go on, but Raymond was one of the rare shows to actually stay pretty strong, and even get funnier as the show went on. The 9th and final season alone had some iconic moments and episodes that were highlights of the series. The show was also still on top ratings wise as it was in the top ten in that 2004–2005 season. The most successful comedy on the air at the time when reality shows were dominating the tube. So when it was announced that Raymond was ending its historic run after the 9th season most people were scratching their heads. Creators Phil Rosenthal and Ray Romano made the hard decision to wrap up the show while everybody still loved Raymond. This gave the cast and crew the chance to not only end the show on their own terms, but to also receive proper goodwill for the end of an era.
4. It had some crazy shenanigans behind the scenes during the final taping.
The taping of the final episode of Everybody Loves Raymond was certainly a night to remember. A comedy of errors happened that fateful night: Patricia Heaton lost her voice which was definitely a problem for filming. They had to send the audience home after feeding them Pizza and doing a cast Q&A session to come back next week when they would try again. The next week Patricia was a lot better but now Doris Roberts lost her voice and Peter Boyle wasn’t feeling so hot either.
