Moesha, the UPN 90’s gem that so many black kids, and even a few kids of other races grew up loving and watching religiously back in da good old days of UPN and The WB. Moesha was a show about a beautiful and intelligent young black girl named Moesha Mitchell going through the trials and errors of being a teenager and dealing with the ups and downs of life with the love and support of her family, Father Frank Mitchell, Step Mother Dee Mitchell and younger brother Miles Mitchell and her best friends Kim Parker, Niecy Jackson and Hakeem Campbell, the guy best friend who officially lived next door but practically lived at the Mitchell house and was always there for every meal occasion. Moesha also had her share of boyfriends from the aspiring rap artist Q to smooth talking Jeremy played by Usher Raymond, Womanizing and self centered Ohadji played by the late great Merlin Santana of The Steve Harvey Show fame, the seemingly perfect and all American college boy Aaron played by Brandon Quintin Adams and quite a few more… But in my personal opinion the one and only true love for Moesha was Hakeem, her homeboy, best friend and constant meal companion. Now, I know a lot of people love Q and Mo and some might just prefer if she ended up with Q, and don’t get me wrong I liked their relationship as well, but, for me Hakeem and Moesha were just meant to be and I got five good reasons why:

5. Mo cannot STAND whenever Hakeem had a girlfriend.

Every time Hakeem got a girlfriend like a beautiful girl he was seeing whom Moesha couldn’t put a finger on why she disliked her, but, jumped at the chance to expose her when she and Kim discovered she was still seeing another guy, or the time Hakeem was seeing an older woman and Moesha seemed pretty upset and judgmental about the whole thing. Now, sure, she could just be trying to be a good friend, but, I believe she just has too much passion and intensity whenever Hakeem was seeing someone to not be jealous and I think she subconsciously sought to mess up these relationships because deep down she had strong feelings for Hakeem.

4. Mo always butted in to Hakeem’s business without fail.

Whether it was with girlfriends or with Moesha inviting Hakeem’s estranged father to his surprise birthday party without considering how Hakeem would actually feel about it or sticking her nose in when Hakeem considered not going to college and working to become manager at the clothing store he was working at, Moesha always had to stick her nose in and get involved and we all know when someone’s this nosy it’s usually more than a simple friend caring about a friend and goes into something much deeper.

3. Hakeem and Moesha always checked the other.

Hakeem was one of the few people to really step up and check Mo whenever she was letting her emotions get out of control or was just plain wrong which rarely any of her friends or boyfriends were really able to do, Q comes close but nobody could really get Moesha’s head straight or tried to as hard as Hakeem. In turn, when Hakeem was making dumb decisions like possibly not going to college for silly reasons, Moesha was always there to get his head on straight.

2. Hakeem was the most romantic of all Moesha’s boyfriends.

Hakeem may have been a goofball at heart but he was also a smooth brother and could woo Moesha with flowers, candy or smooth words. He was the Prince Charming to Mo’s Cinderella and a girl always appreciates a brother who puts in the effort.

  1. Moesha and Hakeem loved each other and always have.

Plain and simple. They have always had love for each other that went beyond friendship and they enjoy each other’s company. They always say lovers should be friends first and I agree. The best lovers are usually best friends which Hakeem and Moesha were and had a better understanding of each other and a better connection with each other than any of the other people they dated.

Many might disagree with me, but, I’m sorry, folks! Moesha and Hakeem were just perfect for each other and I think it was there all along from the beginning. The chemistry between the late Lamont Bentley and Brandy was for me believable and genuine. You could sense in their interactions a real bond between the two off screen and on and that was missing from their other relationships on the show. With talks of a Moesha reboot buzzing it saddens me that it would have to be without Bentley who unfortunately passed away from an automobile accident back in 2005. Whatever happens, reboot or not I will always imagine that Hakeem and Moesha got married, had a couple kids and both became wildly successful in their careers and happy together to this day.
