Ted McGinley as the rascally gigolo Jefferson D’arcy

It all started that fateful day when Marcy discovered she woke up married to some guy she got drunk with at a party:

Married with Children fans love and adore Steve Rhodes played by stuffed shirt perfection by David Garrison, but edging Steve out a bit by MWC fan standards is the lovably sleazy and mooching pretty boy ex CIA spy current trophy husband Jefferson D’arcy played by the infamous yet incredibly funny Ted McGinley of Happy Days, Love Boat and Hope and Faith fame, but also known as the “Patron Saint of Shark Jumping.”

When Steve left the show after season 4 he left huge shoes to fill, and no one could’ve filled those shoes but McGinley’s Jefferson D’arcy who somehow wormed his way into our hearts the same way he wormed his way into Marcy’s wallet. Becoming the perfect foil to Marcy and the perfect best friend to Al made the character just pop and here are 5 simple reasons Jefferson is the very best!

5. He sings Happy Birthday like no one ever could match!

4. He can rock Karaoke in that oh so special Jefferson way.

3. He always laughs at Al insults towards Marcy like the rest of us.

2. He’d make a terrific first lady.

  1. His name is Jefferson D’arcy and he used to be a spy.

Bonus:

Al and Jefferson were a match made in heaven, true best buds to the end.

Jefferson was in essence, a perfect example of succeeding at replacing a beloved character with another beloved character that only added to the show, not take away from it. Poor Ted McGinley gets a bad wrap for being a show killer but with Married with Children he actually is part of saving this iconic sitcom and for that we should all be eternally grateful.
